His wife, Estella Maud Josephine Chisholm, was born August 06, 1890 in Sheet Harbour. Gerald was the son of merchant John M. Murphy and Mary Cronan. Gerald was a metallurgical engineer at the Nova Scotia Technical College. Maud was the daughter of tradesman John Chisholm and Catherine Martin. Gerald and Maud married on October 15, 1914. In 1921, well-known architect, Andrew Randall Cobb, designed a house in a different style for Gerald F. Murphy at 800 Young Avenue. Cobb designed a house of classical simplicity, like some colonial homes of the 1700s. The firm of H. Videto built the house at the estimated cost of ten thousand dollars. The porch on the left side was added later.
